Dr. Patrick Aeberhard is a French-Swiss cardiologist, born on 13 February 1945 in Paris, who played a key role in founding Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) and later Médecins du Monde, and who has served as President of Médecins du Monde (1987–1989) following earlier leadership within the organization from 1981 to 1995; he began his humanitarian journey as a physician for the ICRC in Biafra in 1968 and conducted numerous missions in conflict zones such as Lebanon, Afghanistan, Rwanda, and Haiti; he also served as a health policy advisor in the cabinet of French Health Minister Bernard Kouchner across multiple terms, focusing on issues like substance abuse, social exclusion, and anti-doping efforts; since 2005, he has been an Associate Professor at Paris 8 University where he created the “Health, Emergency, Development” diploma; he has authored numerous works on humanitarian law, human rights, NGO challenges, global healthcare, and public health ethics, and has been involved with several human rights and aid organizations, contributing to documentaries and scientific publications.
